Guide to Freezing Columns in Airtable for Improved Data Management

Published on Mar 30th, 2024

Managing extensive data in Airtable becomes significantly more straightforward when you know how to freeze columns. Freezing columns in Airtable is a handy feature that allows you to keep certain fields visible while you scroll horizontally through your records. This can be crucial for maintaining a frame of reference, especially when working with wide tables that extend beyond the viewable area of your screen. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you leverage this functionality for optimal data management in Airtable.

Step 1: Open Your Airtable Base

Access your Airtable base. Note that this feature is available only when you are in the Grid view of your table.

Step 2: Identify the Column to Freeze

Hover over the letter at the top of the column that you wish to freeze until you see a down arrow appear.

Step 3: Freeze the Column

Click on the down arrow to open a dropdown menu. From this menu, select the 'Freeze field' option. Instantly, that column will be locked into place on the left side of your screen.

Step 4: Confirm the Freeze

After clicking 'Freeze field,' you can scroll horizontally to ensure that the selected column remains visible while other columns scroll by.

Step 5: Unfreeze Columns (Optional)

If you decide that you no longer need a column to be frozen, simply follow the same steps and choose the 'Unfreeze field' option from the dropdown menu.

Additional Tips:

  • You can freeze multiple columns in your Airtable base if needed. Just repeat the steps for each column.

  • Freezing columns does not affect how the data is displayed to shared users or collaborators unless they freeze columns on their end too.

  • Take advantage of keyboard shortcuts to navigate through the interface more rapidly.
