Gmail Unreplied Email Search Builder

Gmail has no operator that means "nobody replied to this." This builder assembles the closest thing it does support: mail you sent, silent for as long as you choose, with newsletters and internal threads filtered out. Set the options, copy the search string, or open it straight in your own Gmail. It is free, needs no signup, and runs entirely in your browser, so nothing you type is ever sent anywhere.

What each part of the search does

from:me limits results to messages you sent, which is what makes this a "you are waiting on them" list rather than an unread list.
older_than:7d is the silence window. Gmail counts it from the message date, so treat it as a starting point.
-in:inbox is the honest proxy for "no reply came back." A reply usually lands in the inbox and pulls the thread with it.
-category:promotions and friends remove the categories that are never real conversations.
-to:yourdomain.com drops internal threads, which are the biggest source of false positives.

Where this stops being enough

A search finds the threads. You still have to open each one, remember the context, and write the nudge, and you have to remember to run the search at all. That is the part that quietly stops happening in a busy week.

Frequently asked questions

Does Gmail have a search operator for unanswered emails?

No. Gmail has no operator that means "nobody replied to this thread". The closest reliable approximation, and the one this builder uses, is mail you sent, older than your chosen window, that never came back to your inbox, with the Promotions, Social and Updates categories excluded so newsletters do not flood the results. It is an approximation, not an exact answer, and a thread you archived yourself will show up in it.

Is anything I type here sent to a server?

No. The builder is plain JavaScript running in your browser tab. There is no signup, no Google sign-in, no API call, and no LLM. Your email address, your domain and your label names are assembled into a search string locally, and the Open in Gmail button is an ordinary link into your own mailbox.

What does older_than actually count from?

Gmail's older_than counts from the message date, not from the last activity in the thread. That is why the window is a starting point rather than a precise cutoff: set 7 days if you nudge weekly, 3 days for active sales conversations, 14 or 30 for slower relationships.

Why exclude my own domain?

Internal threads are the biggest source of noise in this search, because colleagues answer in Slack or in person and the email thread simply stops. Excluding your own domain leaves the outside conversations, which are the ones where silence actually costs you something.

Can I get this list automatically instead of running a search?

Yes, that is what Thread Pilot does. It watches one connected Gmail mailbox on a schedule, finds the threads where you sent the last message and got no reply, and writes the follow-up as a draft in the original thread for you to review. It never sends anything on its own, and a real reply cancels the pending draft.
