What Are Meta Tags?

Meta tags are snippets of code that provide information about your webpage to search engines and social media platforms. They don't appear on the page itself, but in the HTML code, and they play a crucial role in SEO and social sharing.

When you share a link on Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn, these platforms read your meta tags to create a preview card. Search engines like Google use them to understand your page content and display rich snippets in search results.

SEO Meta Tags Explained

Basic SEO meta tags include the title tag (what appears in search results and browser tabs), meta description (the snippet below your title in search results), and canonical URL (to prevent duplicate content issues). While meta keywords are deprecated and no longer used by search engines, other tags like robots directives help control how search engines crawl and index your content.

Title Tag Best Practices

  • • Keep it between 50-60 characters
  • • Include your primary keyword
  • • Make it compelling and clickable
  • • Include your brand name

Meta Description Tips

  • • Aim for 150-160 characters
  • • Write for humans, not robots
  • • Include a call-to-action
  • • Summarize the page accurately

Open Graph Protocol for Social Sharing

The Open Graph protocol was created by Facebook and is now used by most social media platforms. It allows you to control how your content appears when shared on social networks. The most important tags are og:title, og:description, og:image, and og:url.

The og:image is particularly crucial—it should be at least 1200x630 pixels with a 1.91:1 aspect ratio for optimal display across platforms. Without proper Open Graph tags, social platforms will guess at what to display, often with poor results.

Twitter Card Types

Twitter (now X) supports four card types: summary, summary_large_image, app, and player. The summary_large_image card is most commonly used and displays a large image prominently. Twitter will fall back to Open Graph tags if Twitter-specific tags aren't present, but it's best practice to include both.

Best Practices for Meta Tags

Always include a title and description: These are the foundation of your SEO and social sharing strategy.

Use high-quality images: Social media images should be at least 1200x630px and under 1MB in file size.

Include alt text: Even though it's not always visible, image alt text improves accessibility and SEO.

Test before publishing: Use Facebook's Sharing Debugger and Twitter's Card Validator to preview your tags.

Keep content fresh: Update your meta tags when you update your content, especially article modified dates.

How to Test Your Meta Tags

After implementing your meta tags, it's crucial to test them. Use these free tools:

  • Facebook Sharing Debugger: Shows exactly how your page will appear when shared on Facebook and can clear Facebook's cache if you've updated your tags.
  • Twitter Card Validator: Previews your Twitter card and validates your Twitter-specific tags.
  • LinkedIn Post Inspector: Shows how your content will appear when shared on LinkedIn.
  • Google Search Console: Monitor how your pages appear in Google search results and identify any issues.
